ATD-American, a direct merchant of business and institutional furniture and equipment, announced Jan. 31 that it has acquired a similar business-to-business cataloger, Adirondack Direct, for an undisclosed sum.

Janet Wischnia, president of Wyncote, PA-based ATD, says Adirondack Direct will still be run as a separate catalog title. She does not anticipate any job reductions as a result of the acquisition.

The Adirondack Direct customer base “is complementary to ours, so there could not be a better fit,” says Wischnia. She added that there is the possibility of ATD selling to Adirondack's customers and vice-versa.

ATD focuses on schools, government, and businesses, and has a catalog tailored for each of those branches. Founded in 1926, Long Island City, NY-based Adirondack Direct has a heavier government client base than ATD; it also markets school, church office, and institutional furniture.

The deal does not include Adirondack Direct's regional furniture rental division, Adirondack Rents.
